St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada

What do you do if you have less than 14 hours to spend in beautiful St. John’s Newfoundland? Here’s what I did…

I was here for work and didn’t have much time so I wanted to make the best of my short stay. I arrived at my hotel past 12 am and quickly started to plan what my day would look like. Luckily, I had a very friendly cab driver who agreed to meet me in the morning to show me to my first destination.

Watching the sunrise at Signal Hill was breathtaking. Calm, serene, picturesque …I stared down a hiking path that I longed to explore however, I knew I had to get going. Most of my time was spent wandering around Signal Hill and also observing the beautiful view of the city below. I could feel the cool and crisp morning air and took my time breathing and meditating on my quiet, energizing morning.

My brother had connected me to one of his friends who was a Newfoundland local and agreed to pick me up from my location and have lunch together. We went to The Duke of Duckworth where we both chatted about family, friends, and The Simpsons over a Guinness and fish and chips.

I asked him about some local Newfoundland slangs and the one I managed to remember was “Whadda y’at?”, which translates to “What’s up”. If I recall correctly, an answer could be “This is it”. I’m a bit obsessed with accents and found the local accent quite charming and melodic.

I kept hearing about the east coast hospitality and had to agree….everyone was incredibly kind and generous. As I boarded the plane later that evening, I knew in my heart that one day, I would love to return to explore and hike…and be reminded once again of the beauty that I merely glanced at.
