The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg

Summary

This book takes a look at how habits are formed and the effects they have on our behaviour. More interestingly, it explores how behaviour affects the marketing industry, providing many case studies of the successes and failures of various marketing campaigns. Habit formation can be broken down into three steps -cue, routine, reward. The author offers solutions for those looking to change or break their habits. We need to keep the cue and reward, just change the routine.

My key Takeaways

  1. Habits have a three step loop: cue, routine, reward and if you want to break a habit, replace the routine with something different while keeping the the same/similar cue and reward. Too often people make drastic changes but the key is to keep the familiar elements of a habit while creating a new routine

I would recommend this book to

  • If you are in marketing and are looking at past company case studies and how habits/behaviour are an integral part of the game

  • You want to break a habit or understand human behaviour
